STERLING – Ruth A. (Thomas) Calcia, 96, died peacefully on Friday, October 19, 2012 at UMass Memorial Healthcare-University Campus, Worcester. Ruth was born in Sterling, the daughter of Nellie (Brown) and Michael Thomas, and lived most of her life in Princeton.
She is predeceased by her loving husband, Ernest A. Calcia and her adoring son, David E. Calcia. Ruth is survived by her devoted daughter, Peggy L. Charette and her husband Steven of Holden; her daughter-in-law, Jeanne Calcia; five grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, two great great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Ruth is also predeceased by seven brothers and sisters.
Ruth worked as a farmwife tending to her husband and farm workers. She also worked part time at the Greenmeadow Lodge in Sterling. Ruth was known for her cooking, baking and sewing skills. The cookie jars in her home were never empty and her chocolate chip cookies were the best. She was so proud of her award-winning blueberry tea cake. There was always room at her kitchen table for anyone who happened to come at supper time. She was the perfect mother and grandmother and never hesitated to put the needs of others before her own.
Ruth lived with her daughter and son-in-law until moving to Sterling Village and Rehabilitation Center where she loved the staff and they loved her. Ruth especially looked forward to Sunday Bingo. Her family would like to thank the staff at Sterling Village Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, especially Jeffery and Shannon for their acceptional compassion and care of Ruth over the past two years.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, October 24, at the Miles-Sterling Funeral and Tribute Center, 100 Worcester Road (Rte. 12), Sterling. A funeral service for Ruth will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, October 25 at the First Church in Sterling, 6 Meetinghouse Hill Road, Sterling, with burial following in Hillside Cemetery, Clinton Road (Rte. 62), Sterling. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Sterling Village Residence Fund, 18 Dana Hill Road, Sterling, MA 01564, or to the National Kidney Foundation, National Headquarters, 30 East 33rd Street, New York, NY 10016.
