HOLDEN - Ruth Bentley Price, of Holden, passed away with family at her side on Wednesday, November 23, 2011. Grummy passed away 35 days before her 97th birthday. She would want you to know that her “parts just plumb wore out”.
Her husband for over 60 years, Robert DeMille Price, a local attorney, passed away in January of 2010. Ruth is survived by her three daughters, Katharine Price of Holden, Susannah Haney of Wiscasset, Maine and Rebecca Brooks of Port Matilda, Pennsylvania; and her stepson, Jonathan Price of Albuquerque, New Mexico. She enjoyed the company of six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Ruth was born in Jamestown, New York, daughter of Gustavus E. and Lesbia (Andrews) A. Bentley. She attended Washington High School, and then graduated from Cornell University in 1936, where she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. She also attended NYU medical school and studied art at the Sorbonne in Paris. As an accomplished artist, she mastered drawing, painting and cloisonné enameling. Ruth was an avid gardener, and supported local conservation efforts. She was an accomplished seamstress and pianist. A resident of Holden for over sixty years, she was a founding member of the Friends of Gale Free Library and a recipient, with her husband Robert, of Holden’s Good Neighbor Award. She attributed her longevity to walking two miles twice a day well into her nineties, as well as to a salutary glass of dry sherry every day before supper.
Ruth continually impressed us all with her command of English (and other languages). She was a word wizard, solving crossword puzzles and playing scrabble. Her love of words and language continued up until her dying day. Without a doubt, Ruth was the kindest, gentlest person in the world, and we will all miss her dearly.
A private memorial service will be held “come spring”. We welcome donations in Ruth’s honor either to the White Oak Land Conservation Society, P.O. Box 346, or to the Friends of Gale Free Library, 23 Highland Street, both in Holden, MA 01520. Funeral arrangements are under the care of Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden.
