WORCESTER / HOLDEN - Ruth Winifred (Okerstedt) Dunigan, 94, passed away peacefully, February 16, 2015, with her daughter, Pamela Leck by her side.
Ruth was born on September 19, 1920 in Schenectady NY, the daughter of the late John R. and Olga A. Okerstedt. She was predeceased by her husband of 59 years, Francis “Pat” P. Dunigan, Jr. who passed away in 2000. Ruth is survived by her four children, Margaret D. Rudin of London, England, Paul S. Dunigan of Pembroke, Patricia J. Dunigan of Plymouth and Pamela J. Leck of Spencer; her seven grandchildren, Amanda Rudin, Lisa Cullity, Timothy Rudin, Myles and Bridget Dunigan, and Hanna and Emma Leck. She is also survived by her sons-in-law, Robert A. Rudin and Christopher Leck.
Ruth was a graduate of Nott Terrace High School in Schenectady, NY and The Mildred Elley Business School in Albany, NY. After graduation she was employed in the marketing and advertising department of General Electric in Schenectady. She spent most of her life as a dedicated homemaker and caring for her family. Ruth and her husband had lived on Lovell Road in Holden for 52 years. Following the passing of her beloved husband, she relocated to the Eisenberg Assisted Living facility and then, the Jewish Healthcare Center on Salisbury Street in Worcester. She was an avid golfer, played a good game of bridge and also poker, enjoyed gardening and entertaining. Ruth traveled frequently with her husband Pat. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and taking summer trips to the Cape and in her later years, winter breaks in Florida.
She volunteered at the former Holden District Hospital and was a member of the Holden Women’s Club, the Holden Garden Club and the Cavendish Club of Worcester. In the last stage of her life Ruth coped patiently with the disabling effect of Parkinson ’s disease.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Ruth's family on Saturday, May 16, from 9:15 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. at Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 10:30 a.m. at Saint Mary's Church, 117 Princeton Street, Holden. Burial will be in Grove Cemetery, Holden. In lieu of flowers donations can be made in her memory to the Jewish Healthcare Facility, 629 Salisbury Street, Worcester, MA 01609.
