Biography
WORCESTER - Ruth Starr Jenkins, 93, beloved mother and grandmother passed away peacefully on Sunday morning, September 25, 2016 at the UMass Memorial Hospital, Worcester surrounded by her loving family. Born in Erie, PA and raised in Belmont, Ruth was a daughter of the late Charles K. and Anna (Enright) Smith.
She graduated from Dana Hall, Wellesley in 1942 and continued her education in economics at Radcliffe College. Ruth found great joy in the arts, playing the piano and painting watercolors of landscapes. She dedicated much of her young life to caring for her eight children, and later being a wonderfully devoted grandmother. She also managed the family's real estate interests through the years.
Ruth was predeceased by her three late husbands, Dr. Steven J. Starr, Fred Cronin and Austin Jenkins. She will be lovingly remembered and missed by her eight children and their spouses, Stephen Starr and his wife, Debbie of Venice, FL, Gregory Starr of Omaha, NE, Carol Wheeler and her husband, Edward of Worcester, Jacqueline Starr and her husband, Steven Pappajohn of Maple Valley, WA, Janet Starr and her husband, Dana Dorsett of Worcester, Paula Gordon and her husband, Rick of Marlboro, Annette Loring and her husband, Robert of Worcester and Christopher Starr and his wife, Robin of Acton; her 15 grandchildren, Stacey Starr, Betsy Blake, Rebecca Sommer and James Starr, Brian Wheeler, Collin and Leah Pappajohn, Noah Dorsett, Alex Leito, Sadie and Becky Gordon, Heather, Jackie and Gregory Loring and Stephen Starr; as well as her seven great grandchildren.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Ruth’s family on Wednesday, September 28, from 5-8 p.m. at the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden. Her funeral will be held on Thursday at 9 a.m. from the funeral home with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 10 a.m. at St. George Church, 38 Brattle Street, Worcester. Burial will follow in St. John’s Cemetery, Lancaster. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the Briarwood Residents Assistance Fund, c/o the Briarwood Community, 65 Briarwood Circle, Worcester, MA 01606.
