Biography
LEOMINSTER - Ruth Hess, 95 of Leominster, died on Thursday, November 3, 2016 at the Rose Monahan Hospice Home. She was born in 1921 in Berlin, Germany, to Leon Fichmann and Charlotte Sydow Fichmann.Ruth attended school in Berlin until age 14 when she was forced to quit school because of Hitler's mandates, but possessing a keen intellect, she never quit reading and studying. In 1938, she moved to Israel in a special youth rescue group. It was during this transition that she met her future husband, Hans. They were married in kibbutz Manara, a settlement they helped found on the northern border of Israel. She had two children, Yael and Aryah. In 1958 she moved to the United States and settled in Leominster, Massachusetts. She worked as a molder for twenty-four years at Foster Grant plastic factory. She retired at age 62 to assist her husband in this real estate business. Ruth was known for her beautiful flower garden and she was a voracious reader who loved swimming and story telling.She was a member of Congregation Agudat Achim in Leominster.Her husband of 53 years, Hans predeceased her in 1996. She is survived by her daughter, Jennie Savage of Worcester; her son, Eric Hess of Leominster; her grandson, Michael Savage and his wife, Jane and her great-grandson, Max, all of Portland, Oregon. A sister, Inge Mcgonigle, predeceased her.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, November 7, at the Congregation Agudat Achim in Leominster under the direction of Miles Funeral Home of Holden. Burial will follow at Agudat Achim Cemetery, 320 Rollstone Road, Fitchburg. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Congregation Agudat Achim, 268 Washington Street, Leominster, MA 01453.
