LEOMINSTER - Ruth Epstein, age 99 better known as Ginger to family and friends died on Thursday, March 31st in Heights Crossing in Brockton. She was born on January 21, 1923 to Max and Gussie Gruber in Passaic New Jersey.
Her early years were difficult ones as the Depression decimated family finances and her father’s health deteriorated. She was an only child, and once her father died while she was still in high school she became her mother’s sole support. Ruth was a survivor and her can-do spirit which was definitely on display during those years. After high school she worked, among other things, as a phone operator and also did runway modeling in New York. Her mother developed health issues, and, in the hope of improving her mother’s condition, Ruth made a fateful decision to take her to a warmer climate for a vacation. It was in Miami Beach that she met the love of her life, Philip Epstein, a handsome sailor who was stationed there. The two of them made a striking couple with his dark good looks and her ginger haired beauty. They married in 1947 and were together for 60 years until Phil’s death in 2008. Ruth was a stay at home Mom who always encouraged education and independence for her three daughters. She always wanted the best for us, and we will miss her encouragement and common sense, her hugs and back rubs, her famous chocolate sour cream cake, watching soap operas together and her wonderful taste in clothes - she always gave the best fashion advice and was always beautifully dressed. Even at her 90th birthday party she outshined us all!
Ruth is survived by her three daughters, Gail (Morris) Rosenberg of Seattle, Marlene (Jay) Schick of Long Beach, CA, and Laurie (Joe) Ciccolo of Stoughton; six grandchildren, Dori and Max Rosenberg, Eric and Evan Schick, and Nicole and Alex Ciccolo; and one great grandchild, Emmett Rosenberg.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Monday, April 4th in Chevra Kadisha (Holy Society Cemetery) on Cemetery Road in Leicester under the care of Richard Perlman of Miles Funeral Home of Holden.
We greatly appreciate the staff at Heights Crossing in Brockton for the good care they provided to Mom over the last several years. In Lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations being made in her name to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
