Biography
WORCESTER - Ruth C. (Camann) Raphaelson, 85, of Lansdowne, Virginia, retired-antiques dealer, died today at home after a brief illness. She was the widow of Arnold H. Raphaelson. For more than 25 years she was the chief executive officer and partner with her sister in Newport Trade, a company that participated in antiques shows in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts. She retired in 2010.
Born in Athol, MA, she attended Athol High School in 1947 and later earned her B.A. from the University of Massachusetts in 1951. She was editor of the University literary magazine, a glockenspiel player in the University's marching band, and a member of the Sigma Delta Tau sorority. She attended the University of Maine and received the M.Ed. degree in English Education in 1978 from Temple University. She was a substitute teacher for several years at Upper Dublin High School in Fort Washington, PA.
When Temple University had an annual summer Music Festival on its Ambler campus, she was co-chairperson of antiques sales, buying and selling antiques as a fund source for the festival. When the Festival ended, she founded her own antiques company which specialized in Japanese porcelain and American art pottery. She lived several years in Japan during her husband’s tenure at Temple’s campus in Tokyo, and visited classic porcelain producers throughout Asia, while securing trade partners for Newport.
She was a member of Temple Sinai, Dresher, the Temple University Faculty Wives Association and the Delaware Valley Antiques Dealers Association. She leaves three sons, Marc of Upperville, VA,Jonathan of Worcester, MA, and Joshua of Santa Monica, CA, one daughter, Yuka McGreen, of Cornwall, NY and eight grandchildren, Mason, Amelia, Rebecca, Jake and Kaitlyn Raphaelson and Jasmine, Tabitha and Damien McGreen.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Sunday, October 26, 2014 at B'Nai Brith Cemetery, 55 St. John's Road, Worcester under the direction of Richard Perlman of Miles Funeral Home of Holden, Massachusetts.
