Russell W. Gordon

June 13, 1931 — December 25, 2005

RUTLAND – Russell W. Gordon, Sr., 74, of 67 Maple Avenue, and of Palm Harbor, Florida, died on Sunday, December 25, 2005 in St. Andre’s Healthcare in Biddeford, Maine, after an illness.

His wife of 47 years, Phyllis B. (Beauford) Gordon, died in 2003. He leaves his son, Russell “Chip” W. Gordon, Jr. and his wife Beth of Inyokern, CA; a half-brother, Beverly Gordon and his wife Barbara of Greenville, GA; three granddaughters; seven great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. A brother, Maurice Gordon, Jr., predeceased him. He was born in Holden, son of Maurice and Margaret C. (Barr) Gordon, and has lived 50 years in Rutland. He was a graduate of Rutland High School and served in the U.S. Coast Guard during the Korean War.

Mr. Gordon worked for Norton Company in Worcester for 37 years, retiring in 1993. He joined the Rutland Police Dept. in 1960, Chief of Police from 1977 to 1982, and a member of the Mass. Police Chiefs Association. He was a volunteer firefighter for the town of Rutland, a member of the Fire Brigade, and a member of the First Congregational Church of Rutland. He was a 50-year member of the Rufus Putnam Lodge of Masons and a 32nd degree Mason including the Scottish Rite Bodies of Worcester. He was a member of the Aleppo Temple Shrine in Wilmington and the Worcester County Shrine Club. He was past Master and 50-year member of the Rutland Grange and was a former leader of the Boy Scouts of America Troop 141 in Rutland.

The funeral service for Mr. Gordon will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 30, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. Spring burial will be in Rural Cemetery, 142 Main Street, Rutland. Calling hours are from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 29, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Shriners Burns Institute, 51 Blossom Street, Boston, MA 02114.
