Russell D. Montcalm

July 12, 1931 — March 14, 2015

STERLING – Russell D. Montcalm, 83, passed away on Saturday, March 14, 2015 at Healthalliance Leominster Hospital after an illness. He was born in Yarmouth Port, the son of Florence F. Montcalm and had lived most of his life in the Worcester County area before moving to Sterling in 2008.



He leaves his loving wife of 26 years, Penelope “Penny” G. (Arsenault) Montcalm; two sons, Glenn D. Kush and his wife, Christine and Gregg R. Kush and his wife, Debra, all of Sterling; a brother, Richard S. Mundy of Meredith, NH; five grandchildren, Nathan, Camden, Nikolai, Rachel and Michael; and nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by a sister, Elaine Bearse.



Russell was a Corporal in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He served with Company F, 19th Infantry and was awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Korean Service Medal with three Bronze Service Stars and a Presidential Unit Citation. Following his service to his country, Russell was a furniture salesman for many years working for Werber and Rose in Clinton, Shop and Save Furniture in Worcester and Goodnow-Pearson in Gardner.



He was a well known local singer and entertainer who performed at the Statler Hotel in Boston and Mechanics Hall in Worcester. He also performed with the Happy Medium Sounds throughout Central Mass, including Twin Oaks Restaurant in Sterling. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans Charter 24 in Leominster, Hiram O. Taylor American Legion Post 189 in Sterling and the West Boylston VFW Post 6907.



A committal service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 18, at Hillside Cemetery in Sterling. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Sterling Fire Dept. Ambulance Fund, P.O. Box 515, Sterling, MA 01564.
