Russell D. Graves

HOLDEN/SHREWSBURY – Russell D. Graves, 73, passed away on Wednesday, May 30, 2012 at UMass Memorial Healthcare – University Campus after an illness.

He leaves his wife of 51 years, Elizabeth A. (Hearns) Graves; a son, Stephen D. Graves and his wife Alison of Jefferson; a daughter, Cynthia A. (Graves) O’Brien and her husband Timothy of Holden; two brothers, Richard Graves and his wife Lorraine of Douglas and George Graves and his wife Elaine of Holden; five grandchildren, Staci, Danielle, Erica, Alyssa and Jacob; several nephews, nieces and a large extended family. A brother, Donald Graves and a sister, Margaret Wood predeceased him.

Russell was born in Spencer, the son of Harold and Olive (Russell) Graves and lived in Shrewsbury for over 30 years before moving to Holden twelve years ago. He was a diamond inspector at Norton Company in Worcester for 45 years before retiring in 1998 and he also drove a paper truck for the Worcester Telegram & Gazette part-time for 25 years. Russell enjoyed his summers at “The Camp” spending time with his family and friends.

The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at UMass Memorial Healthcare – University Campus, especially ICU nurses, Cathy and Troy for their care and compassion during his illness.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, June 3, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden. A funeral service for Russell will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, June 4, in the funeral home followed by a committal service at Mountain View Cemetery in Shrewsbury. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Veterans Inc., 69 Grove Street, Worcester, MA 01605.
