S Ruth R. (Roberts) Cross

HOLDEN – Ruth R. (Roberts) Cross, 83, of Holden, died peacefully on Saturday, November 27, 2010, at Millbury Healthcare Center, Millbury, after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimers Disease.
She leaves her husband of 62 years, John S. Cross, Sr.; a son, John "Jack" S. Cross, Jr. and his wife Donna of Holden; a daughter, The Rev. Rebecca A. Tornblom of Holden; three grandchildren, Jill Cross of Worcester, Jeffrey Cross and his fiancée Katie of Texas, Jodi Dinardo and her husband Mike of Wells, Maine; and nephews and nieces. Four sisters, Madeline Myers, Marie Valentine, Viola Roberts and Roberta Clerica, predeceased her. Mrs. Cross was born in Wrentham, the daughter of William and Anna M. (Heller) Roberts, the youngest of five sisters, and lived 62 years in Holden.
Mrs. Cross graduated from Wrentham High School in 1945 and Newport Hospital School of Nursing, Newport, Rhode Island in 1948. She was a registered nurse and worked 40 years at the former Holden District Hospital, serving as Director of Nursing from 1967 until her retirement in 1989. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Holden and served as a Deacon for several years.
Ruth loved to garden and was an avid collector of antique glass. She enjoyed vacationing in Maine and Virginia with her husband and family. She loved the Christmas season and spent hours every year decorating her home to reflect the joy and beauty of the season.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 4 PM to 7 PM on Monday, November 29, at the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. Funeral services for Mrs. Cross will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, November 30 at the First Baptist Church of Holden, 1216 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden, with interment at Grove Cemetery, 1290 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden after the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Baptist Church of Holden, 1216 Main Street, Holden, MA 01520; or to the Alzheimer's Association, Massachusetts Chapter, 311 Arsenal Street, Watertown, MA 02472.
