Rosalie 'Toots' I. (Weller) Spindler

August 1, 1928 — August 13, 2012

RUTLAND - Rosalie “Toots” I. Spindler, 84, of Rutland died after a long illness in her home, surrounded by her loving family on Monday, August 13, 2012.

Rosalie was born in Worcester, the third daughter of Arnold C. and Ruth M. (Slocum) Weller. She lived her entire life in Rutland, graduating from Rutland High School and Salter’s Secretarial School. She worked as the secretary for the Rutland School principals so she could be near her three children. On weekends, she could be seen at the Rutland Ski Area, making sure the skiers were well fed. In later years, she worked for the then Dept. of Environmental Quality Control of the state. In her late 50’s she went back to school and became an engineer for that department, endearing herself to surrounding towns, as she helped them maneuver through the state’s complicated regulations. She always went the extra mile to help them out.

Rosalie was a quiet, but active member of her community. She was always active at the First Congregational Church of Rutland serving on various committees and attending many clubs. Her baked beans were a favorite at the church suppers and her fudge at the church fairs. She helped start a drop in center for teenagers when her children needed some place to go. She supported her husband, Bob, in the numerous activities he was in. Rosalie was also a member of Eastern Star and Beta Signa Phi.

She was a warm and generous woman, who was the center of her close family. She always had a non critical listening ear for anyone who came through her door. Rosalie was predeceased by her husband, Robert “Bob” Spindler, Sr, of 62 years. She leaves her three children, Diane Spindler, Robert Spindler, Jr. and his wife Anne, all of Rutland, and Nancy Carr and her husband David of Winchendon; five grandchildren, Jeremy Glynn and his wife Jenna, Heidi Bolduc and her husband Micah, Colleen Spindler-Ranta and her wife Sara Cushman, Kerri Spindler-Ranta and her husband Sam Tracy and Sean Ranta and his wife Marin, plus two great-grandchildren, Loki Spindler Ranta and Edith Ranta. Rosalie was predeceased by her older sister, Virginia Dulmaine. She leaves her two sisters, June Segar of GA and Susie Martin of AZ and her brother Arnold Weller of MA.

A Memorial service will be held for Rosalie on Sunday, August 26 at 10:30 a.m. at the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. Private burial will be in Rural Cemetery in Rutland. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to VNA Care Hospice, 120 Thomas Street, Worcester, MA 01608; or to the First Congregational Church, P.O. Box 484, Rutland, MA 01543.
