Life Legacy
HOLDEN - Roger A. Starbard, 86, a lifelong Holden resident, died peacefully at home on August 29, 2017 after an illness. Dad was the son of Lloyd and Mary (Allen) Starbard and the husband of Barbara (Sherman) Starbard, who predeceased him in 1994 after 38 years of marriage. He is survived by two daughters, June Derosier and her husband, Michael of Rutland and Joyce Altermatt of Manchester, CT; he leaves three grandchildren, Jessica Armstrong, Daniel Altermatt and Caitlyn Altermatt; his friend, Mark Altermatt; and his brother, Kenneth Starbard and his wife, Winifred and three nephews. He graduated from Holden High School and was honorably discharged from the U. S. Army after serving two years in Korea during the war. He graduated from Becker Junior College and Brown University's Graduate School of Savings Banking and was a mortgage banker for the former Consumer Savings Bank (previously Worcester Five Cents Savings Bank) for 32 years before opening Millbrook Mortgage Corp. in Worcester. He served as President and Treasurer until his retirement in 1994. Dad served 48 years on the Holden Fire Department, where he first responded to calls while still in high school and retiring as a Lieutenant and training officer in 1996. He was a proud member of a dedicated group of volunteers that included his very good friends Bob Horrigan, Al Belisle and Irving Rice. He was a member of the First Congregational Church in Holden, the Rufus Putnam Lodge A.F. & A.M. and a 32nd degree and life member of the Scottish Rite Bodies - Valley of Worcester. Dad was also a member of the Massachusetts Consistory in Boston, MA and the Aleppo Temple Shrine of Wilmington, MA. He was a member of the National Rifle Association, G.O.A.L. and the Call Volunteer Firemen's Association of MA. He also served on Holden's 225th Anniversary committee. Dad's hobbies included wood carving, woodworking, photography, travel, gardening and taking care of his home and property. For many years we all enjoyed summer vacations on Lake Winnipesaukee. Thank you to the Worcester Visiting Angels team. We are forever grateful to Peter for his care, patience, kindness and friendship the past 2 and a half years. We also thank Dad's VNA of Worcester hospice team. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, September 10th at 1 pm at the First Congregational Church, 1180 Main Street, Holden.
