Robert F. Whooley

HOLDEN – Robert F. Whooley, 64, of Reservoir Street, died peacefully at home under the loving care of his family and the VNA Hospice on Tuesday, January 24, 2012, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Boston and raised in Dedham, the son of George and Irene (Cox) Whooley, and lived the last 29 years in Holden.

After graduating from Dedham High School, Bob enlisted in the United States Navy, honorably served his country in Vietnam from 1967 to 1968, and remained in the Naval Reserve until 1972. While in Vietnam Bob received the Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon.

Upon returning home from the Navy, Bob went to work for New England Telephone Co., now Verizon, where he continued to work for 40 years until retiring as an engineer in 2010. He was a member of St. Mary’s Church in Jefferson. He enjoyed playing golf with his wife and many friends, and was a member of several local leagues. Bob also enjoyed vacationing with his wife at Myrtle Beach and was a Boston College Hockey fan and a long time season ticket holder. He loved spending time with his family, especially his two granchildren whom will miss him dearly.
He leaves his beloved wife and best friend, Marie J. (Gulinello) Whooley; his daughter, Diana M. Antul of Templeton; his mother, Irene (Cox) Whooley of Dedham; two grandchildren, Connor and Caitlyn Antul both of Templeton; two brothers, George Whooley of Medfield and Michael Whooley of Dedham; four sisters, Carolyn Lucas of Roslindale, Irene Reen of Cape Cod, Maureen Chisholm of Norwood and Debra Boyce of Baltimore, Maryland; and many nephews and nieces.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 3 to 7 p.m. on Friday, January 27, at the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. In honor of Bob’s life, A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, January 28, at St. Mary’s Church, 114 Princeton Street, Jefferson. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Why Me, 1152 Pleasant Street, Worcester, MA 01602; or VNA Care Hospice, Development Office, 120 Thomas Street, Worcester, MA 01608.
