Robert P. Smith

February 16, 1930 — December 26, 2014

BELMONT / WESTMINSTER – Robert P. Smith, 84, went home to his Lord and Savior on Friday, December 26, 2014 at the Mount Auburn Hospital, Cambridge, after being stricken ill. He was born in Gardner, a son of the late Forrest E. and Martenah E. (Prescott) Smith.

Bob was raised in Westminster and later spent many years in Chelsea. He entered the Air Force as a young man and then transferred to the U.S. Navy. For 15 years he served as a cook aboard several submarines, including the USS Grouper, The USS John Marshall and the USS Albacore. He was proud to have also served aboard one of the first nuclear submarines, as well as on the Guided Missile Unit 90 and the Guided Missile Surface Unit 215. He received the National Defense Service Medal with one star and the Good Conduct Medal (four awards). Upon his discharge and return to Massachusetts, Bob set out on a mission to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ on the streets of Boston. He could often be found in the area of Downtown Crossing, Fenway and several of the MBTA stations sharing his love for the Lord. He enjoyed visiting the beach, classic cars and motorcycles. He also was an avid bicyclist, cycling all around the Boston area. His most recent enjoyment was at the Beech Street Senior Center in Belmont, where he attended senior lunches several times a week and enjoyed the various programs offered there.

He leaves his three children, Michael C. Smith and his wife, Deborah of Monson, Cynthia D. Smith of Shrewsbury and Forrest F. Smith and his wife, Theresa of Paxton; his sister, Darlene McCauley of Holden; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
