RUTLAND – Robert E. McCarthy, 81, passed away on Friday, October 25, 2013 at the Meadows of Leicester after an illness.
He leaves his loving wife of 53 years, Marjorie “Marge” A. (Livingston) McCarthy; two sons, Edward O. Gelinas of Harvard and Gene Paul Gelinas of Worcester; two brothers, James and William McDonald, both of South Carolina; a sister, Barbara O’Connor of South Carolina; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his son, Patrick McCarthy.
Robert was born in Charlestown, the son of John J. and Mary McCarthy and had lived in Clinton before moving to Rutland in 1975. Following high school, Robert enlisted into the military and was a corporal in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He worked at Colonial Press and Ray-O-Vac, both in Clinton and was a shipper at Norton Company for 18 years. He was a member of St. Patrick’s Church and enjoyed traveling. He was an avid scuba diver and taught classes at Fort Devens. He will be sadly missed.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, October 29, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden. Funeral services for Robert will be held from the funeral home on Wednesday, Oct. 30, with a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial in St. Patrick’s Church, 258 Main Street, Rutland. Burial will follow at Rural Cemetery.
