HOLDEN/WEST BOYLSTON – Robert L. Himmer, 75, of Holden, passed away at home on Monday, December 22, 2014. Born in Clinton and raised in Sterling, Bob was the son of Albert and Eva (Pesso) Himmer and lived many years in West Boylston and Holden. Bob attended Wachusett Regional High School in Holden.
In 1957, he married the love of his life, Mary Ann Flagg of West Boylston, and together they raised their four children in West Boylston and Holden and later ventured to own and operate several successful businesses.
In 1960, Bob and Mary Ann started Himmer Limousine and Taxi Service in West Boylston, and in 1965 purchased their first ambulance, a 1957 Cadillac, and established Himmer Ambulance Service out of their home on Bunker Parkway. With a tenacious and entrepreneurial spirit, they expanded their ambulance service to Holden and subsequently operated another ambulance service in Worcester under the name of Worcester Ambulance Service. In 1972, they merged their two ambulance operations and became Worcester Himmer Ambulance. With over 15 ambulances and numerous wheelchair vans to their credit, Bob and Mary Anne sold their ambulance service in 1980.
After enjoying several years of retirement in Melbourne, Florida, Bob and Mary Ann once again got the entrepreneurial bug, and in 1988 opened Nation Wide Wheelchair Company in Melbourne, providing a variety of wheelchairs, mechanical lifts and accessories. After selling their business in 2010, they officially declared their retirement and moved back to Massachusetts, residing in Holden.
In his spare time, Bob enjoyed fishing and collecting antique fishing reels, rods and lures. He loved his family and was proud of his children and grandchildren. Although challenged later in life with various health problems, Bob remained determined to live every day to its fullest. He will be remembered for his integrity and passion for life.
