Robert V. Johnson, 89
Former Holden Selectman
HOLDEN / PLYMOUTH - Robert V. Johnson, 89, formerly of Holden and now living in the Manomet section of Plymouth, passed away peacefully after a short illness at the Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Plymouth.
He leaves his wife of almost 70 years, Jean Caro (Tidman) Johnson. He also leaves three daughters, Kathleen Shivitz and her husband, William of Renton, WA, Kristina Doucette and her husband, Robert of Manchester, NH and Pamela Manocchi and her husband, James of Bedford, NH; six grandchildren, Robert Shivitz and his wife, Nicole of CA, Thomas Shivitz and his wife, Diane of WA, Linnea Manocchi Couture and her husband, Ben of NH, Amy Manocchi Barrett and her husband, Brian of MA, Lisa Manocchi of MA and Alex Manocchi of NY, and 7 great-grandchildren.
In addition he leaves two brothers, Elden Johnson of FL and Philip Johnson of NY; four sisters, Lillian Erickson of FL, Mae Burgoyne of MI, Nancy O'Connor of Holden and Janice Johnson of Falmouth; and many nieces and nephews. Three brothers, Edwin, Ralph and Andrew Johnson, and a sister, Anne Leonard, predeceased him.
Bob was born in Holden, a son of Edwin H. and Elvira (Nelson) Johnson, and lived in Holden until his retirement to Manomet. He was a proud graduate of Holden High School, class of 1944. He graduated from Wentworth Institute after serving his country with the U.S. Army during World War II.
He joined the family plumbing business EH Johnson & Sons, worked for Holt Coal of Holden and spent the majority of his career working in sales for various companies, retiring from ECC in Jefferson in 1992. Upon retirement, he worked part time at Miles Funeral Home.
Bob served the Town of Holden on many committees and for 21 years on the Board of Selectman. Known as Gentleman Bob on the Select Board, he served as chairman for several terms. Bob represented the Board on the Senior Citizen Affordable Housing-Flagler Drive, Council on Aging, Senior Center Fund Raising-new building and the Senior Center Building Committee. He was also a volunteer firefighter for Holden.
He was best known for his quick wit, sense of humor, and his devotion to family.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Bob's family from 3 to 7 p.m. on Friday, March 4, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden. Burial will be private in Grove Cemetery, Holden. Please omit flowers. Donations in Bob's memory may be made to the Holden Senior Center, 1130 Main Street, Holden, MA 01520
