WORCESTER/HOLDEN – Robert M. Johnson M.D., 95, of the Briarwood Retirement Community, died peacefully on Saturday, July 1, 2017 at UMass Memorial Medical Center – University Campus, Worcester. He was born and raised in Haverhill, the son of Edward W. and Agnes D. (Drury) Johnson and lived many years in Holden before moving to The Briarwood Community over 20 years ago. His wife of over 63 years, Margaret “Peg” (Chesley) Johnson passed away in 2009. Dr. Johnson is survived by three sons, Philip H. Johnson of Pawley’s Isand, SC, Christopher C. Johnson of Center Harbor, NH and Bruce G. Johnson of Webster, NH, and.; nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, Stephen Johnson, as well as his brother, Edward Johnson.
Dr. Johnson completed his undergraduate studies at Tufts University and went on to earn his Doctorate of Medicine from Tufts Medical School. During WWII he enlisted in the U.S. Army and proudly served his country as a Captain and Medical Officer in Laveno, Italy as well as Fort Story, Virginia. He married the love of his life, Margaret Chesley, and the young newlyweds settled in Holden. Dr. Johnson enjoyed a career of over 40 years and was Chief of anesthesiology at Hahnemann Hospital in Worcester, from 1955 to 1986. He was a longtime, active member of the First Baptist Church in Holden. Dr. and Mrs. Johnson had a passion for crafts and were members of The Worcester Center for Crafts and the League of New Hampshire Craftsmen. The couple formed a group, Glasshoppers, to combine their special talent for combining pressed flowers and stained glass projects. Dr. Johnson was also a member of the Worcester Art Museum and Mechanics Hall in Worcester. He truly loved being a grandfather and great-grandfather and felt that passing on his love, wisdom and experiences to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren kept him young at heart.
A memorial service honoring and celebrating Dr. Johnson's life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 19, 2017 at the First Baptist Church of Holden, 1216 Main Street, Holden. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church of Holden, Memorial Fund, 1216 Main St., Holden, MA 01520 or to the National Kidney Foundation, 85 Astor Ave., Suite 2, Norwood, MA 02026.
