Robert J. Horrigan

February 4, 1932 — July 27, 2014

HOLDEN – Robert “Bob” J. Horrigan, 82, of Holden, died peacefully on Sunday, July 27, 2014 at the Holden Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Center. Born in Worcester and raised in Holden, Bob was the son of Michael J. Horrigan of Charlestown and Jeannette (Creamer) Horrigan of Holden, and lived his entire life in Holden.



Bob graduated from Holden High School in 1950, and furthered his education at both Worcester Polytechnic Institute and Northeastern University in Boston. He worked 43 years in automotive sales and was the sales manager at Chaffin’s Garage and later George Luddy Chevrolet, both in Holden.



He honorably served his country in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. Bob was a proud second generation “Holdenite” and always supported area merchants and local causes.



As an active firefighter, Bob passionately served 49 years on the Holden Fire Department until retiring as a Lieutenant at the age of 64. He was a member of the John E. Harkins American Legion Post 42, the Chaffins Men’s Club and the Friends of the Holden Council on Aging, all in Holden. He was also a member of the Rufus Putnam Lodge of Masons in Rutland.



Bob was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. He was proud of his children and grandchildren, and their many accomplishments. He was always interested in their activities and is fondly remembered by his family for his commitment and patience as a Holden Little League coach and team manager for Worcester PeeWee Hockey. Bob will be missed for his selfless nature and zest for life.



He leaves his loving wife of 53 years, Karen L. (Andersen) Horrigan; a son, Stephen R. Horrigan and his wife, Michelle of Holden; a daughter, Nancy H. Heppenstall and her husband, Ronald of Rutland; a brother, Richard E. Horrigan and his wife, Carolann of Freedom, New Hampshire; three grandchildren, Katherine and William Horrigan, and Avery Heppenstall; nephews and nieces. A sister, Janice E. Horrigan died in 1992.



Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Bob’s family from 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, July 30, at the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. A funeral service honoring his life will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 31, at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Grove Cemetery in Holden. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Firefighter Remembrance Fund, c/o The Holden Fire Department, 1370 Main Street, Holden, MA 01520.
