STERLING – Robert Charles Hamel, 84, of Sterling passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, May 1, 2018. He was the loving husband of the late Margrit H. (Frentzel) Hamel. Robert was born in Lawrence, the son of William and Jeanette (Bernier) Hamel and he was raised in Clinton.He is predeceased by his wife, Margrit H. (Frentzel) Hamel; his daughter, Barbara Hamel; and his sisters, Janet Langlois and Frances Tourcotte. He leaves behind three daughters, Carmen Luksha of Templeton, Sandra Dieringer and her husband, William of Fern Park, FL and Roberta Villamarie and her husband, Daniel of Rifle, CO; his sister, Marie Ponyta; three grandchildren, Joseph Luksha III, Jason Luksha and Victoria Luksha; two great grandchildren, Jesselynn and Lindsey Luksha; a great great granddaughter, Jeannette A. Diaz; and many nieces and nephews.After graduating from Clinton High School, Robert enlisted in the US Army. He served in the 2nd Armored Division, stationed in Germany where he met his beloved wife, Margrit. He also served in the 437th Signal Corps, the 850th Signal Company and the 35th Infantry for a total of 31 years retiring with the rank of Sergeant 1st Class.After serving in the Army he worked at Colonial Press for five years and then at Ecological Fibers, Inc in Lunenburg for 17 years until his retirement. Robert enjoyed hiking and camping with his family every summer. After his retirement, he and Margrit continued to enjoy camping and traveling. They were members of the Family Campers and RV’ers Organization.He will be missed.Relatives and friends are invited to attend a calling hour from 10 to 11 am followed by a funeral service on Monday, May 7th at the Miles~ Sterling Funeral and Tribute Center, 100 Worcester Road, Sterling . Burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery, Clinton Rd., Sterling.
