Robert "Bob" Ferguson, aged 99, passed away early April 8 at Notre Dame du Lac in Worcester. He is survived by two sons, Daniel (Terri) of Northwood, NH and Peter of Worcester; and two daughters Ann Ameno (Jules) of Boca Raton, FL, and Ellen Broadwell (Scott) of Oberlin, OH. He also leaves six grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Nancy (Parsons) in 2020 and a son, Stephen, in 2005.
Bob grew up in Swampscott, MA and attended Worcester Polytechnic Institute. His studies were interrupted by service in the U.S. Navy during World War II, where he trained as a radio operator. He served in the Philippines once hostilities ended in 1945. Upon discharge, he returned to WPI and graduated in 1948.
Bob and Nancy first moved to Holden to raise their family in the early 1950's while Bob worked at the Alden Lab and completed his graduate studies at WPI. He later worked for Rice Barton and for Morgan Construction Co. He also worked as an adjunct instructor at Worcester Junior College, teaching classes on surveying. Bob has been an active member of First Congregational Church of Holden since arriving in Holden, and has served on many boards and volunteered for many projects sponsored by the church.
Bob's interests included gardening; travelling throughout the U.S, Canada, and internationally; and reading about history, biography and genealogy. He was also an avid golfer who could be found completing at least nine holes into his 90's. He and Nancy were proud to have traveled to all 50 states, each of the 10 Canadian provinces and many other countries.
Bob was a lifelong fan of New England sports, including the Bruins and the Patriots. He was especially excited to celebrate with the rest of Red Sox nation when the team won the World Series and the "curse of the Bambino" was finally lifted in 2004.
