RUTLAND – Robert "Bob" J. Griffin, 77, of Pommogussett Road, died Saturday, May 2, 2009 in Oakdale Rehab. & Skilled Nursing Center, West Boylston, after a long battle with Alzheimer's.
He leaves his wife of 55 years, Virginia H. (Herrick) Griffin; two sons, Robert Jay Griffin of Rutland and Lee A. Griffin of Paxton; a brother, Richard W. Griffin of Arizona; two sisters, Lois Love of Holden and Norma Kallio of Paxton; 3 grandsons, Douglas J., Adam J. and Paul J. Griffin all of Paxton; many nephews and nieces. A son, Mark D. Griffin, died in 1985. A brother, William Griffin, died in 1980. He was born in Worcester, son of William H. and Julia T. (Myers) Griffin and lived in Rutland all of his life. He was a graduate of Rutland High School.
Bob was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict serving from 1951-1954, achieving the rank of Corporal. He was awarded the United Nations, National Defense and Korean Service medals with two bronze stars. He was owner and operator of the Griffin's Mobil Station in Rutland for many years. Later he worked at the Glavin Center in Shrewsbury. He was a member of the First Congregational Church of Rutland, the American Legion Post 310 in Rutland and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6907 in West Boylston.
The funeral service for Bob will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 5th, in the First Congregational Church of Rutland, 264 Main Street. Burial will follow in Rural Cemetery, Main Street, Rutland. Memorial donations in Bob's memory may be made to the Rutland Fire Brigade Rescue Fund, 240 Main Street, Rutland, MA 01543. Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden, is directing arrangements.
