Robert B. Burleigh

HOLDEN – Robert B. Burleigh, 91, a long time resident of Holden, died Sunday, February 20, 2005, in the Genesis Westford House.

He survived his late wife, Greta E. (Hubbard) Burleigh to whom he was married for 63 years. He leaves a daughter, Sondra L. Olson and son-in-law Gordon A. Olson of Westford; a son, Ronald B. Burleigh and a daughter-in-law Nancy R. (Strong) Burleigh of Gainesville, Florida; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Beverly Burleigh of Hudson, New Hampshire; a brother-in-law, Howard Hubbard and his wife Corrine of Barre; nieces and nephews. A brother, Donald E. Burleigh, predeceased him. He was born on September 20, 1913 in Malden, son of Charles R. and Marjorie W. (Lund) Burleigh. As a youth, he resided in many places throughout the country finally settling in Holden as a young man. He graduated from Holden High School in 1933 and was chairman of the 1933 Reunion Committee every five years through 1998.

Mr. Burleigh worked for Heald Machine Comapny in Worcester for 39 years primarily as a safety engineer and in the sales department. While there he participated in many social activities and was especially active in all forms of sports, playing softball and basketball for many years on Heald teams and was an active skier and golfer well into his eighties. While at Heald he was responsible for the development and operation of the Heald Recreation Park located on Indian Lake. He was very active in music and was a member of the Classic Swing Band and the Aletheia Grotto Band for many years. He was a life member of the Boylston Lodge A.F. & A.M. and the Aletheia Grotto M.O.V.P.E.R. since 1941. He was very active in Holden civic affairs, serving and chairing the Holden Recreation Committee and the Finance Committee and was a member of the Zoning Board of Appeals. He also helped author the Enabling Act for the first Selectman/ Town Manager form of government in MA and saw it enacted by Massachusetts Legislature.

The funeral service for Mr. Burleigh will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 26, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. Burial will be in Worcester County Memorial Park, 217 Richards Avenue (Rte. 56), Paxton. A calling hour will be from 10 to 11 a.m. on Saturday before the funeral.
