Rita M. (Costello) Duffey

HOLDEN – Rita M. (Costello) Duffey, 85, of 218 Reservoir Street, died at home on June 1, 2005. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother and the world’s best cook.

She leaves her husband of 58 years, Harold J. Duffey; two daughters, Terry Ann McKeon of Worcester and Patty Garabedian and her husband Peter of Holden; a sister, Mary Costello of Loudonville, NY; four grandchildren, Patrick Garabedian of Rutland, Michael Garabedian of Newton, Timothy McKeon of Los Angeles and Brian McKeon of Grafton; a great-grandson, Cole J. Garabedian of Rutland; two nieces and three nephews. A son, Leo S. Duffey, of Pawtucket, RI, predeceased her in 2002, and her brother, James Costello, predeceased her. She was born in Troy, New York, the daughter of Dennis and Theresa (Horrigan) Costello, and lived many years in Holden, eight years in Worcester before moving back to Holden three years ago.

Mrs. Duffey graduated from Troy Catholic High and Troy Business College and worked several years for the State of New York. She later worked with her husband as a broker in their family business Ivan N. Moulton Insurance Agency in Clinton. Previously she was a broker for Union Mutual Insurance Co. in Worcester. She was a member of St. Mary’s Church, Friends of the Holden Council on Aging and a former President of the St. George’s Church Women’s Guild. She was an avid golfer and belonged to Wachusett Country Club, Holden Hills Country Club and Green Hill Municipal Golf Course. Rita truly enjoyed playing bridge with her friends and vacationing with her family on Cape Cod. With her husband, she spent many a morning at the Greendale YMCA.

The funeral for Mrs. Duffey will be held on Saturday, June 4, from the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden, with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Mary’s Church, 114 Princeton Street, Jefferson. Calling hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, June 3, in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimers Association, Massachusetts Chapter, 36 Cameron Avenue, Cambridge, MA 02140.
