Biography

Concord/Orlando -- Richard G. Pettingell passed peacefully on September 12, 2017.  He was born in Arlington, on August 1, 1927, the son of John M. and Myrtle Van (Wye) Pettingell and spent his elementary school years in Belmont.
He graduated from Culver Military Academy in 1945 and was then drafted into the US Army. Richard served in Korea and was honorably discharged in 1947. Shortly after his discharge, and while working as a carpenter, he met Mildred “Mitzi” Morgan of Newton, at the Nuttings Dance Hall.  Mildred and Richard were married for 64 years, residing in Concord, and Orlando, FL. Mildred predeceased Richard in 2012.
Richard graduated in 1952 from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, with a degree in Civil Engineering and with three of their four children in tow.  Richard was a registered professional engineer and served as a partner, with his father John, in Pettingell Associates as a consulting engineer and an independent sales representative for industrial equipment in Belmont and Waltham, providing services throughout New England.
Throughout his career Richard continued to design and build homes in his “spare” time with help from his sons, including his own residence in West Concord, in 1968 and a home in Boxborough in 1973. Richard relocated to Orlando, FL in 1982, and continued to sell industrial equipment.  After his retirement, he operated a wallpapering business with his son, John Andrew. Richard was an optimist, pragmatist and a modern Renaissance man with varied skills and interests throughout his life.
Richard is survived by his four children, William R. (Leslie) Pettingell of North Attleboro, Virginia P. Henschel (David) of Paxton,  John Andrew Pettingell of Paxton,  and James R. (Sarah) of Glastonbury, CT; eight grandchildren, Meredith Coyle of Glen Ellyn, IL, Kirsten Smith of Holden,  Matthew Henschel of Jamaica Plain, Holly Travis of Salem, Whitney Henschel of Paxton, Scott Pettingell of Framingham, Judith Gibriano of Berlin, CT and Christine Pettingell of West Hartford, CT.
