WORCESTER/SARASOTA, FL ~ Richard Owen Slein, Jr., 62, a native of Worcester and formerly of Newport, RI, Boston and Sarasota, FL., died peacefully in the Rose Monahan Hospice House, Worcester on Sunday, November 14, 2010 in the company of family members, after a battle with cancer.
Richard was the second child of the late Richard Owen and Jeanne (Dorman) Slein of Vesper Street in Worcester. He leaves behind his brother, Commander Michael J. Slein USN (Retired) and his wife Bonnie of Middletown, RI; two sisters, M. Katherine Hessel and her husband Roger of Holden and Margaret Mary Carlson and her husband Scott of Holden; his nieces, Caitlin Slein of East Greenwich, RI and Elizabeth and Emily Carlson of Holden; and his nephew, Daniel Hessel of Holden; his aunts, Sister Maria, (Alice Slein) of the Dominican Monastery of the Mother of God, West Springfield, Rosemary Altieri of Whitinsville, Caryl Dorman of Centerville, Kathryn Slein of Worcester; and a large number of cousins. Richard also leaves a wide circle of friends in the Sarasota, Florida area. His nephew, Kevin Slein of Middletown, RI, predeceased him.
Richard grew up in the "Tatnuck" section of Worcester, attending public schools in Worcester. He later attended Cape Cod Community College where he became licensed as a social worker and an allied health rehabilitation therapist in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. He served as a rehabilitation therapist at Edgehill in Newport, RI; as Community Outreach Director for ADCARE Hospital in Worcester and Brookside Hospital in Nashua, NH for several years in the 1980s. He later became Executive Director of a rehabilitation center in Cambridge in the 1990s where he also served on several boards of directors, including the Board of Brighton Marine Hospital in Brighton. He moved to Sarasota, Florida in 2000.
Richard was a most respectful, caring and compassionate care-giver who dedicated his life to those in need of substance abuse rehabilitation.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, November 16th in St. George's Church, 38 Brattle Street, Worcester. Burial will follow at the Worcester County Memorial Park in Paxton. There are no calling hours. The family respectfully requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Monastery of the Mother of God, 1430 Riverdale Street in West Springfield, MA. 01089. Funeral arrangements are under the care of Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden.
