HOLDEN –Richard S. Myrdal, 79, passed away on Saturday, September, 17, 2022 after a long, hard-fought battle with heart disease. He was born in Greenwich, CT, the son of the late John & Julia (Virus) Myrdal. Dick leaves his loving wife of 54 years, Kathy (Carmody) Myrdal; his son Michael and his wife Kristin, grandson Cooper from CA; son Matthew and his wife Jennifer, granddaughter Indigo, grandson Xavier from HI. Dick also leaves his older brother, John Myrdal, from HI, along with several nieces and nephews.
Dick graduated from St. Mary’s High School in Greenwich, CT. He went on to the University of Connecticut and graduated in 1964 with a degree in Sociology. While attending UConn, he joined the Marine PLC Program and graduated as a Marine Corp. Officer. He served in Vietnam from 1964-1967. He was awarded numerous decorations and was honorably discharged as Captain. Over the years, strangers have made a point of stopping Dick to thank him for his service of which he would always reply, “It was my honor”. Semper Fi
Dick had a successful business career working in the Nuclear Fuel Industry for 16 years with B & W and with Combustion Engineering. He finished his career at Simplex Time Recorder in Gardner, MA as Director of Comp and Benefits. He loved all sports, especially basketball. He coached Little League Baseball as well as Biddy League basketball. During his retirement, Dick became an avid golfer. He played with a group of men, known as “Teachers” for over 30 years at Holden Hills Golf Course. They were a fun group of guys that he enjoyed many laughs with. Dick was an avid outdoorsman and along with his wife, Kathy, turned their backyard into a sanctuary for wild animals. You could always see him outside doing something in his yard.
We thank all of our family members, friends, neighbors old and new, for their prayers, love and support. We would also like to thank the many doctors who cared for Dick over the years, especially his primary care doctors, Dr. Daniel Massarelli (of Worcester) and Dr. W. Grandin (of Beth Israel Deaconess in Boston).
Relatives and friends are invited pay respects to Dick’s family from 2-5 pm on Sunday, September 25 at Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main St., Holden, MA. A Mass honoring his life will be on Monday, September 26 at 11 am at St. John’s Catholic Church, 44 Temple St., Worcester, MA. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family.
