Richard F. Gates

SARASOTA/HOLDEN - Richard F. Gates, 72, of Sarasota, Florida, formerly of Holden, Massachusetts, a devoted father, loving husband, loyal friend, and proud New Englander, passed away peacefully on January 15, 2025, at home surrounded by family. Born in Nahant, Massachusetts, Richard was known for his strong work ethic, love of family, and ability to bring people together.

After residing in Holden for over 40 years, Richard and his wife Paula embraced a new chapter in Sarasota, enjoying the sunshine and community. A dedicated New England sports fan, Richard spent countless hours coaching his children's teams and cheering for the Red Sox, Patriots, and Celtics. He loved hosting legendary gatherings, traveling to the Caribbean with close friends, and dedicating over 40 years to a meaningful career in health and human services, helping countless individuals.

Richard was predeceased by his beloved first wife of 37 years, Wendy (Hyson) Gates. He is survived by his loving wife, Paula (Ceglowski) Gates; his children, Ryan Gates and wife Shauna of Clermont, FL , Dyana Nickl and husband Michael of Sturbridge, MA, and Adam Gates and his wife Jenna of Danvers, MA; his brother Robert Gates and wife Patricia of Lynn, MA, seven cherished grandchildren and a wide circle of extended family and dear friends.

Friends and relatives can join the family for calling hours at Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main St, Holden, on January 31st from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM. A memorial service will be held the following day, Saturday, February 1st at 11:00 AM at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 346 Shrewsbury St., Holden.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude's Children Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, in Richard's honor, a cause close to his heart. Richard's life was filled with love, laughter, and purpose, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
