WORCESTER – Dr. Richard Forrest Atwood, 88, formerly of Hadwen Road, Worcester, died peacefully on Saturday, November 16, 2013 at the Oakdale Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Center, West Boylston. Dr. Atwood was born in Providence, Rhode Island,the son of Sydney and Fernande (Toquier) Atwood. He is survived by his devoted wife of many years, Virginia (Van de Workeen) Atwood; two daughters, Nancy Atwood of Holden and Joy M. Atwood of Cambridge; and a granddaughter, Ashley E. Atwood of Holden. Dr. Atwood was predeceased by a son, Bruce Atwood.
Dr. Atwood graduated from South High School in Worcester in 1944 and attended Clark University and Worcester Polytechnic Institute before earning his PhD in Psychology from Boston University. He taught Psychology at UMASS Medical Center for several years. Previously, Dr. Atwood worked as a research Chemist for Nyanza Co. in Lawrence. He had also worked as a pilot both commercially and privately for many years. After retiring, Dr. Atwood continued to pursue his passion for psychology by working as a consultant in that field. He was past president of the Boston Power Squadron Boating Club and enjoyed spending time on the water. He will be dearly missed by his family and coworkers.
Funeral services are private and under the care of Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main St., Holden. Burial will be at a later date at Warwick Cemetery, Warwick, MA.
