RUTLAND – Richard F. Cerrone, Sr., 79, formerly of Worcester, died Monday July 12, 2004, in Worcester Medical Center after an illness.

He leaves his wife of five years, Rita A. (Benoit) Mullen–Cerrone; two sons, Francis R. Cerrone of Sterling and Richard F. Cerrone, Jr. of Worcester; two daughters, Barbara A. Bourassa of Spencer and Nancy M. Cerrone of Worcester; two step-sons, James W. Mullen of Spencer and John M. Mullen of Rutland; two step-daughters, Janice A. Childs of Paxton and Susan J. Mantha of Oakham; 17 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; a nephew and two nieces. His first wife, Barbara A. (Baer) Cerrone, died in 1984; and his brother, Charles Cerrone, predeceased him. He was born in Gardner, son of Geatano and Philomena (Ciolfi) Cerrone, and lived many years in Worcester, Delray Beach, FL, and several years in Rutland.

Mr. Cerrone served 23 years in the U.S. Army retiring as a Sergeant E7 in 1973. He was a World War II Army Veteran and served in both the European and Pacific Theaters. He also served three tours of duty in Vietnam. After retiring from the military, he worked 15 years for Warner Swasey Co. in Worcester. He was a member of the Rutland American Legion Post 0310, Greendale Retired Men’s Club, Friends of the Rutland Council on Aging, and the Worcester Chapter of the AARP. He enjoyed traveling.

A military funeral for Mr. Cerrone will be held Thursday, July 15, from the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Patrick’s Church, 258 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Rutland. Burial will follow in St. John’s Cemetery, 260 Cambridge Street, Worcester. Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 14, at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made the Rutland Fire Brigade Rescue Fund, 240 Main Street, Rutland, MA 01543; or the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen Street, Framingham, MA 01701.
