EAST BROOKFIELD – Richard C. McNeaney, 78, of East Main Street, died Tuesday, June 30, 2009 at home with his family by his side after a battle with pulmonary fibrosis.
He leaves his wife of 58 years, Ruth L. (Surprenant) McNeaney; six sons, David R. McNeaney and his wife Lee, Peter J. McNeaney and his wife Anne all of North Brookfield, John A. McNeaney and his wife Candace of Belchertown, Paul M. McNeaney, James A. McNeaney and his wife Caron, Timothy S. McNeaney and his wife Jennifer all of East Brookfield; nine grandchildren, Jason, Nicole, Meghan, Brian, Alicia, Alison, Andrew, Matthew, and Ian; three great-grandchildren, Gabriella, Sean, and Emily; many nieces and nephews; and his dog, Emma Rose. His brother, Raymond McNeaney and a grandson, Patrick Richard McNeaney predeceased him.
Dick was born in Spencer the son of James H. and Irene A. (Sourdif) McNeaney. He graduated from David Prouty High School in 1949. He was a Navy Veteran of the Korean Conflict serving as a Boatswain's Mate 2 on the USS Myles C. Fox DDR829. Dick was employed by Rockwood Sprinkler, Firematic Sprinkler Devices, Berg Tool and Machine, and the Worcester Vocational Technical School. He retired from Rural Housing Improvement as a Rehabilitation Specialist in 1986. Dick was active in his community serving on many boards including the Regional School Committee, the Finance Department, and Cemetery Commissioner. He was a member of the Lashaway Senior Citizens, the Boulette-Skyten Post 386, and a former member of the Lassawa Tribe of Red Men. Dick loved to read, dance, watch sports, and spend time at the family house in North Haven, Maine. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who will be missed by his family and friends.
The funeral for Dick will be held on Friday, July 3, 2009 from the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden, with a Mass at 11 a.m. in St. John the Baptist Church, 131 Blaine Avenue, East Brookfield. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. Calling hours will be held on Thursday, July 2, 2009 from 5-8 p.m. in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Dick's memory to a charity of your choice.
