S Mary R. (Healey) Urquhart

December 4, 1925 — July 3, 2010

WEST BOYLSTON – Mary R. (Healey) Urquhart, 84, of Yorktown Rd., died peacefully on Saturday, July 3, 2010 in Saint Vincent Hospital, Worcester after an illness.

Her husband of 62 years, Duncan H. Urquhart died in 2007. She leaves two sons, Douglas M. Urquhart and Brian R. Urquhart, both of West Boylston; a daughter, Laurie A. Owens and her husband David of Franklin; three grandchildren, Lily Urquhart, Elizabeth and Arianna Owens; Lily's mother, Ann Wilson, who was Mary's caretaker for the past year; and her many nephews and nieces whom she loved as her own children. Mary's sisters, Margaret O'Grady and Harriett Dunn and a brother, Paul Healey all predeceased her. She was born and raised in Newton, the daughter of William and Loretta (Tryder) Healey, and lived 50 years in West Boylston. She graduated from Newton High school in 1944.

Mary was a member of Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, West Boylston Historical Society and a charter member of the West Boylston Garden Club. She was a former Girl Scout Leader in West Boylston and was a long time volunteer at Hahnemann Hospital in Worcester where she and her friends made crafts for hospital patients. Mary was known by some as "The Quilt Lady". She made several hundred baby quilts for the "Linus Project" for premature babies at UMass Memorial Hospital and made many full-size quilts for family and friends.

Mary was a lifelong artist. Her home was full with oil paintings of landscapes and still-lifes. She also loved to sew and was an expert seamstress. She made virtually all her own clothes, and over the years, made hundreds of dresses for her daughter and her many nieces. She loved to make wedding dresses for family members and friends.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, July 9th, in the Miles–Sterling Funeral Home, 100 Worcester Road (Rte. 12), Sterling. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 10th, in Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, 111 Worcester Street, West Boylston. Burial will follow in Mt. Vernon Cemetery, 32 Church Street, West Boylston. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, 111 Worcester Street, West Boylston, MA 01583.
