HOLDEN – Donald R. Haynes, 83, of Sterling Road, Jefferson, died peacefully on Wednesday, August 4, 2010 in the Odd Fellows Home, Worcester, after an illness.
His wife of 57 years, Ann M. (Butler) Haynes passed away on July 22nd. He leaves a son, Kevin J. Haynes and his wife Diane of Spencer; a daughter, Karen A. Heath and her husband Jeffery of Jefferson; two brothers, Harold K. Haynes of Montclair, California and Raymond W. Haynes of Fitchburg; two sisters, Nancy A. Johnson and Martha J. Johnson, both of Boylston; four grandchildren, Matthew M. Haynes and his wife Abigail of Rowley, Beth M. Haynes of Worcester, Courtney S. Heath of South Portland, Maine and Elizabeth A. Heath of Jefferson; two great-grandchildren, Natalie and Lillian Haynes; nieces and nephews. A brother, David R. Haynes, and a sister, Jean Haynes, predeceased him. He was born in Worcester, a son of Everett H. and Margaret J. (Frye) Haynes, and lived in Jefferson for the last 50 years.
Mr. Haynes attended Worcester Boys Trade and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was a machinist at Reed Rolled Thread & Die in Holden for 31 years, retiring in 1988. He was a member of St. Francis Episcopal Church in Holden and a long time member of the former St. John's Episcopal Church in Worcester, where he sang in its choir.
He was a 26-year member of the Rufus Putnam Lodge of Masons in Rutland, a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the Scottish Rite Bodies of Worcester. Mr. Haynes was an avid golfer and enjoyed fishing, hunting and bowling. He was a member of the Friends of the Holden Council on Aging and enjoyed playing pitch, cribbage and billiards at the Holden Senior Center.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, August 8th, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. A Masonic Service will be held at 4 p.m. during calling hours. The funeral service for Mr. Haynes will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, August 9th, in St. Francis Episcopal Church, 70 Highland Street (Rte. 31), Holden. Burial will follow in Grove Cemetery, 1290 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mass Audubon, Wachusett Meadow, 113 Goodnow Road, Princeton, MA 01541.
