SHREWSBURY – William R. Hayes, 52, formerly of Worcester and Auburn, died Saturday, May 19, 2007 in Shrewsbury Nursing & Rehabilitation, Shrewsbury, after a long illness.
He leaves his wife of 33 years, Patricia M. (O’Connor) Hayes; a son, Jeffrey W. Hayes, and a daughter, Susan M. Hayes both of Auburn; two brothers, Robert F. Hayes of Rutland, and James P. Hayes of Loudon, NH; two sisters, Kathleen M. O’Connor of Rutland and Kristine A. Hall of Greenfield, NH; several nephews and nieces. A brother John M. Hayes predeceased him. He was born and raised in Worcester, the son of Richard F. and Barbara F. (Masiello) Hayes and later moved to Auburn.
Mr. Hayes graduated from St. Peter’s High School in 1972 where he played goalkeeper on the school’s inaugural season. He attended Worcester Industrial Technical Institute and was a key member of the 1972-1973 Junior College tournament basketball team. He worked for 20 years for the U.S. Post Office in Worcester.
The funeral for Mr. Hayes will be held on Wednesday, May 23rd, from the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden, with a Mass at 10:00 a.m. in St. Patrick’s Church, 290 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Rutland. Burial will follow in St. John’s Cemetery, 260 Cambridge Street, Worcester. Calling hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, May 22nd, in the funeral home.
