George R. Griffin

RUTLAND – George R. Griffin, 77, of 262 Pommogussett Road, died on Monday, January 8, 2007, in Rose Monahan Hospice Residence in Worcester.

He leaves his wife of 52 years, Dorene (Kelly) Griffin; two sons, Dirk A. Griffin and his wife Tamara of Frederick, Maryland and Glenn A. Griffin and his wife Nicole Johnson of Cambridge; a daughter, Kelly A. Robinson and her husband Patrick of Rutland; a brother, John H. Griffin of Rutland; and two grandchildren, Joseph and Thomas Eastwood of Frederick, MD. He was born in Worcester the son of Carl R. and Margaret (Rice) Griffin and lived here all of his life. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War.

Mr. Griffin received his B.S. and M. Ed from Worcester State College. In addition, he earned an M.MA from Utah State University, and attended Brown University, Worcester Polytechnic Institute and the College of the Holy Cross. He started his teaching career at West Boylston High School where he taught mathematics from 1955 to 1975. He taught at Anna Maria College in Paxton for 33 years, starting as a lecturer in 1967 in mathematics and Director of Institutional Advancement. In the mid seventies, he was appointed Associate Dean of Academic Affairs. He also served as Treasurer of the College for several years and returned to classroom teaching before retiring in 2000. He will be long remembered for his dedication to the College in the various areas in which he served so well.

Mr. Griffin served as a Selectman in Rutland from 1965 to 1974 and 1976 to 1990. While serving on the Selectboard, he served on both the School Building and School Needs Study Committees in Rutland. He was a member of St. Patrick’s Church, Rutland American Legion Post 310, Massachusetts Teacher’s Association and the National Education Association.

The funeral for Mr. Griffin will be held on Friday, January 12, from the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden, with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Patrick’s Church, 290 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Rutland. Burial will follow in West Rutland Cemetery, Corner of Rte. 122 and 122A, Rutland. Calling hours are from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, January 11, in the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made St. Vincent de Paul Society, c/o St. Patrick’s Church, P.O. Box 939, Rutland, MA 01543.
