RUTLAND/OAK BLUFFS – Wayne R. George, 52, of Oak Bluffs, Martha’s Vineyard, died peacefully in his mother’s home in Rutland surrounded by his loving family on March 20, 2007, after an illness.

Wayne leaves his mother, Florence M. (Van Holt) George of Rutland; a brother Michael T. George of Worcester; three sisters, Patricia A. Scales of Rutland, Laura L. Jancura and her husband Franklin of Rutland, and Pamela K. Sackett and her husband Rocky of Rutland; his long-time companion, Elizabeth B. Hopkins of Oak Bluffs; several nieces and nephews. He was born in New York City, the son of the late Michael F. George and lived six years in Rutland before moving to Oak Bluffs.

Wayne graduated from Wachusett Regional High School in 1972 and moved to Martha’s Vineyard where he worked as a finish carpenter for over 30 years. He was a member of the Martha’s Vineyard Dart League, the Portuguese American Club’s Holy Ghost Society, and the Martha’s Vineyard Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9261. He enjoyed darts, pool, fishing and skiing. Growing morning glories, marigolds, and tomatoes was one of his favorite past times. Most of all he loved spending time with his family in his home at Oak Bluffs and at the beach. He enjoyed his beloved pets, Noisy and Chester.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a calling hour from 1 to 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 24, in the First Congregational Church of Rutland, 264 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Rutland, followed by a funeral service at 2 p.m. Burial will be private in Hope Cemetery, Worcester. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Angel Flight Northeast, 492 Sutton Street, North Andover, MA 01845; or the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital Development Office, Building Fund, 1 Hospital Road, P.O. Box 1477, Oak Bluffs, MA 02557. Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden, is directing arrangements.
