HOLDEN – Florence R. E. (Tillman) Sjostedt, 91, of Parker Avenue, died Thursday, October 1, 2009 in UMass Memorial Healthcare, Worcester. She joined Rey and Donna and other beloved relatives and friends in eternal peace. Her faith in God, love of family and friends, personal resilience and strength sustained her throughout her lifetime.
Born in Worcester in 1918 to Erik G. and Ruth T. (Borgeson) Tillman, she attended elementary school in Worcester before moving to Holden and graduating from Holden High School. She worked at Norton Co. where she met and later married Reynold J. Sjostedt of Stockholm, ME, her husband of 42 years. Throughout her life, she raised her family and helped run farms in Holden and Stockholm. She cultivated prize winning gladiolas and violets, vegetables and became an accomplished cake decorator. A member of Immanuel Lutheran Church for many years, she was a member of The Ladies Aid Society and Koinonia Seniors. She member and was former board member of the Holden Council on Aging and the Friends of the Holden Council on Aging. She was honored and recognized by the Holden Board of Selectmen, and received the Lifetime Achievement Award by the Holden Council on Aging for her many volunteer hours at the Holden Senior Center. An endowment fund was established in her name at the Greater Worcester Community Foundation for her work with seniors.
She lived to see her beloved Red Sox capture two World Series titles and she cheered the Patriots to Super Bowl successes. She enjoyed casino trips, cruises, family outings and the companionship of family and friends. Proud of her Swedish heritage, she was a long time member of the Nordic Lodge #611 VASA Order of America. She was former president of the Women's Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6907 in West Boylston.
She is survived by her son, John E. Sjostedt and his wife Judith of Parkersburg, WV, and her daughters, Cynthia Stark and husband Edward of Holden, Ruth Pollard and husband Lawrence "Buzz" Pollard of Franklin and Erica Sjostedt of Holden who provided her primary care and support. She also leaves five grandchildren, John and Mark Pollard, Peter, Jennifer and Daniel Sjostedt and Peter's wife Sarah; a brother-in-law, Richard Sjostedt of Gold River, CA; sisters-in-law, Bea Page and Shirley Sjostedt of Stockholm, and Marianne Sjostedt of CA; as well as nieces and nephews and her cat, Pearl.
She was predeceased by her husband Rey who died in 1984, beloved daughter, Donna Dale who died at age 6 in 1961, her parents, Erik and Ruth and her brother, Carl who died in infancy. The family would like to thank her many friends for their support and friendship over the years. A special thanks to the Rev. Daniel Wilfrid and the Rev. Ronald Jackson for their spiritual and inspirational support, the staff at Oakdale Rehab. and Skilled Nursing Center and the doctors and staff at UMMC, 3 East wing, for their care and support.

A funeral service for Mrs. Sjostedt will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, October 4th, in the Immanuel Lutheran Church, 346 Shrewsbury Street, Holden. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Holden Council on Aging/Senior Center Endowment Fund, c/o Greater Worcester Community Foundation, Inc., 370 Main Street, Suite 650, Worcester, MA 01608-1738; or a charity of one's choice.
