BARRE – George "Red" J. Mennard, 76, of Hubbardston Road, died peacefully at home on Sunday, November 8, 2009, after a brief illness.
He is survived by his close friend and companion with whom he lived, June A. Locke; two sons, Thomas Mennard of Clinton and Paul Mennard of Raleigh, NC; three daughters, Sheryl Davis, Janet Thompson and Julie Sabine, all of Barre; two step-sons, Michael Locke of Hubbardston and Nathan Locke of Rutland; a step-daughter, Diane E. Ketonen of Auburn; two sisters, Barbara Mennard and Bernice Miller, both of South Barre; five grandchildren, Shawna, Seth, CJ, Nicholas and Becky; three step grandchildren, Leah, Erin and Harrison; a great-grandson, Cainen; two step great-grandchildren, Codey and Alexis; nieces and nephews; and his former wife, Sylvia Mennard of Barre. He was born in Tuckerton, Pennsylvania, the son of George and Kathryn (Emerich) Mennard and lived in Wheelwright before moving to Barre.
Red was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean conflict. For many years, he was head of maintenance at the Odd Fellows Home in Worcester. Previously he worked for Waine Roy Co. in Hubbardston, Barre Wool and CBX Construction in Leominster. He was a 50-year member of the Mount Zion Lodge of Masons and the Cradle Rock Chapter No. 125 Order of the Eastern Star, both in Barre. He was a member of the Christ Episcopal Church in South Barre and enjoyed golfing, traveling to Florida and working in his yard.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a calling hour from 12 noon to 1 p.m. followed by a funeral service at 1 p.m. on Thursday, November 12th, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. Burial will be at 2 p.m. on Friday, November 13th, in the Massachusetts Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, 111 Glenallen Street, Winchendon. Memorial donations in Red's memory may be made to the Mount Zion Lodge of Masons Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 11, Barre, MA 01005.
