HOLDEN – Raymond Scherdell, 71, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, died suddenly Sunday, June 13, 2004.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Ann (Sundholm) Scherdell; three sons, Kenneth and wife Joann, David and wife Carol, and Paul, all of Rutland; a daughter, Jill Bailey and husband Tracey of Barre; and eight grandchildren, Joshua, Jeffrey, Jenna, Conner, Collin, Katie Ann, Aaren, and Garrett. A son, Jeffrey, died in 1986. He was born in Worcester on February 4, 1933, son of Raymond N. and Bernice (Champlin) Scherdell. He graduated from Classical High School in 1951 and earned his Bachelor and Masters degrees in Education from Worcester State College. He lived in Holden for 45 years.
Mr. Scherdell worked as an elementary school principal in Princeton and Fales and Hastings Elementary Schools in Westborough. A long time member of the First Congregational Church in Worcester, he served on many committees and sang in the choir for years. He shared his gifts of music throughout his life as a singer and pianist, ministering since retirement to local nursing homes. He cherished time with his family and loved the outdoors.
The funeral service for Mr. Scherdell will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 18, in the First Congregational Church in Worcester. Burial will follow in Worcester County Memorial Park, 217 Richards Avenue (Rte. 56), Paxton. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Organ Restoration Fund, First Congregational Church in Worcester, 1070 Pleasant St., Worcester, MA 01602; or the Bosler Humane Society, P.O. Box 12, Baldwinville, MA 01436. Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden, is directing arrangements.
