Raymond T. Alzapiedi

STERLING – Raymond T. Alzapiedi, 94, a retired Massachusetts State Police captain, passed away on Sunday, January 6, 2013 at Sterling Village after an illness.

He leaves a sister, Helen Christy of Shrewsbury; two sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Alzapiedi of Clinton and Mildred Alzapiedi of Sterling; and nieces, nephews and cousins. Three brothers, James, Howard and Richard Alzapiedi and a sister, Dorothy Harlick, predeceased him. He was born in Clinton, the son of Albert and Margaret (Freel) Alzapiedi and lived in Clinton before moving to Sterling in 1960.

Raymond graduated from Clinton High School in 1936 and enlisted in the Army in 1942. He served in the Pacific Theatre where he received three Battle Stars, a Combat Infantry Badge and a Bronze Star. He was released from active duty as a captain in 1946 and became the Chief of Police at Fort Devens Civilian Guard Force. Raymond graduated from the Massachusetts State Police Academy in 1947 with the rank of trooper. In 1951, he was recalled to active military duty during the Korean Conflict and served overseas before returning to the state police. He was discharged from the Army Reserves with the rank of major in the military police.

During his career, Raymond became an instructor at the state police academy and later graduated from the New England State Police College in 1967. He retired from the Massachusetts State Police with the rank of captain and troop commander in 1968. After retiring, he worked for Guaranty Bank and Trust Company in Worcester as a leading figure in modern bank security and was the founder of the fraudulent check association and also sold real estate in his spare time.

He was a member of St. Richard of Chichester Church and for many years was the head usher at the 11 o’clock Mass. He enjoyed boating and fishing on Lake Washacum and spending his winters in Florida. Raymond loved to meet the gang at the Clinton McDonald’s and Finder’s Pub in West Boylston and his many trips with the Retired Massachusetts State Police.


Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 9, in the Miles-Sterling Funeral and Tribute Center, 100 Worcester Road, Sterling. The funeral for Raymond will be held on Thursday, Jan. 10, from the funeral home with a 10:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial in St. Richard of Chichester Church, 4 Bridge Street, Sterling. Burial will follow at St. John’s Cemetery in Lancaster. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Massachusetts State Police Museum and Learning Center, Inc., 470 Worcester Road, Framingham, MA 01702.
