Phyllis May (Walker) Mackay

August 4, 1930 — January 17, 2016

HOLDEN - Phyllis May (Walker) MacKay, 85, passed away on Sunday, January 17, 2016. She was born on August 4, 1930 in Somerset, the daughter of George and Gertrude (Sykes) Walker.

Phyllis was raised in Somerset and enjoyed living near the ocean. She graduated from Somerset High School in 1948 where she was proudly valedictorian of her class. She attended New England Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing in Boston and received her RN. Phyllis worked at Holden Hospital for several years and returned to her nursing career in various settings after raising her three children.

Phyllis married her college sweetheart, Donald MacKay in 1951 in Fall River. They were happily married for 64 years. She was an active member of her church and volunteered with a variety of youth organizations. Phyllis was a long standing member of Worcester County 4-H which she enjoyed with her children while they were growing up and served as Worcester County 4-H Fair secretary for many years. She most enjoyed spending time with her family, time at the ocean including sailing trips on the Flying Cloud with Donald during their retirement years and their Springer Spaniel dogs.

Phyllis is survived by her husband, Donald MacKay; her daughters, Donna Ahearn and her husband, Tim of Spencer and Susan D’Amico and her husband, Anthony of Shirley; her son, Robert MacKay and his wife, Ann of Berlin; eight grandchildren, Jeremy and Josh Ahearn, Jamie Cormier, Michael and Heather D’Amico, Ryan, Alex, and Cory MacKay; and seven great-grandchildren.

The family extends their sincerest thanks to the relatives, friends and neighbors who supported Phyllis and Don during her illness. We would also like to thank the staff and administration at Dodge Park Rest Home and Jewish Healthcare Center, both in Worcester, for their attentive and compassionate care. Their commitment to their residents is exceptional.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Phyllis’s family on Wednesday, Jan. 20, from 1 to 3 p.m. followed by a memorial service honoring her life at 3 p.m. in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden. A private committal service will be held at Grove Cemetery in Holden. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Worcester County 4-H Fair, c/o UMass Extension, 120 Stafford St., Suite 201, Worcester, MA 01603, or Alzheimer’s Association, Massachusetts/New Hampshire Chapter, 480 Pleasant Street, Watertown, MA 02472.
