HUBBARDSTON– Phyllis E. (Paddock) Meagher, 88, passed away peacefully at home in the loving care of her family on Tuesday, August 4, 2015. She was born in Worcester, a daughter of the late F. Selby and Marie M. (Morrill) Paddock.
Phyllis was raised in Rutland. She graduated from Rutland High School, and then while attending the Salter Secretarial School in Worcester, she met Robert Meagher, a handsome young man, who had been sharing the bus rides to school. Phyllis and Robert were married on June 10, 1950 and settled in Hubbardston on a farm, often referred to as “Cathedral Farm” where she was able to be until her last day. Phyllis was a dedicated wife and mother, lovingly caring for her husband and children as the days passed. Once her children were a little older, Phyllis decided to return to school and later graduated from Fitchburg State College, where she earned a degree as an English teacher. Phyllis cherished the idea of sharing the importance of education and spent the next 10 years as a teacher in at the Gardner Junior and Senior High Schools. To her students, Phyllis was always considered a gift as she helped shape so many young lives. Following her retirement, Phyllis and Robert travelled extensively throughout the lower 48 states as well as Alaska. She also enjoyed her visits to Europe. She was a longtime member of the First Congregational Church of Rutland and its’ Monday Club. Phyllis was always available as a baker for church bake sales, always willing to share her wonderful creations, especially her cookies, with others.
Besides her beloved husband of the past 65 years, Robert, Phyllis will be forever missed by her three children, Paul F. Meagher and his wife, Adeline of Sudbury, David R. Meagher and his wife, Ellen of Burlington, VT and Susan Marie Meagher of Goffstown, NH; her five cherished grandchildren, Madeline, Michelle, Sean, Conor and MaryKate Meagher; her brother, Franklin S. Paddock of Rutland; as well as several nieces and nephews. Her sister, Beverly Paddock Gallant is deceased.
A private funeral service, followed by the burial in Rural Cemetery, Rutland will be held for Phyllis’ family per her wishes. A memorial service honoring and celebrating Phyllis’ life will be held on Saturday, September 19, 2015 at 11 a.m. at the First Congregational Church of Rutland, 264 Main Street, Rutland. Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be sent to the First Congregational Church of Rutland, 264 Main Street, Rutland, MA 01543 or to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen Street, Framingham, MA 01701. The Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden is assisting the family with the arrangements.
