Biography
WORCESTER- Phyllis (Jacobson) Halfen, 92, died of heart disease on Thursday, May 12, 2016.
She was the middle of three daughters born to Nathan O. Jacobson and Lena (Shapiro) Jacobson. She is survived by her daughter, Wendy Halfen of Worcester; two sisters, Aileen Porter of Worcester and Eunice Kushman of San Francisco; and several nieces and nephews. Phyllis was predeceased by her husband, Israel Halfen who died in 1969 and her eldest daughter, Sandra Halfen who died in 1959, aged 9 yrs.
She was a graduate of Commerce High School. She was born in Worcester and lived here all her life. A homemaker and a stay at home mom, Phyllis returned to the workforce after the death of her husband. She was employed at the Worcester chapter of the Arthritis Foundation and then the Worcester Telegram & Gazette, retiring in 1988.
Phyllis followed politics closely and was interested in current events, but it was her love of music that gave her enjoyment and sustained her all her life. As a young woman she sang with the Worcester Festival Chorus for 9 years lending her strong alto voice. Phyllis was an avid Opera buff and collected an extensive library of opera and classical music recordings. Never missing a Saturday afternoon Metropolitan Opera radio broadcast, operatic voices could be heard wafting out her open window as she listened intently following her opera libretto.
A loving wife and mother, her warmth and quiet down to earth personality will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
