STERLING – Phyllis E. (Cook) Sheppard, 85, of 6 Sholan Terrace died Friday, November 25, 2005, in the Sterling Healthcare Center after a brief illness.
Her husband, Richard S. Sheppard, former shellfish constable and business owner in Ipswich, died in 1977. She leaves her son, Richard A. Sheppard and his wife Lynne of Sterling; a sister, Frances Belanger of Beverly; two grandchildren, Christopher Sheppard of Glendale, California and Mark Sheppard of Vernon, Connecticut. A brother, Robert Cook, and a sister, Eleanor Cunningham, predeceased her. She was born and raised in Georgetown, the daughter of Alton L. and Gladys F. (Sherburne) Cook, and lived 47 years in Ipswich before moving to Sterling in 1989. Her father, Alton L. Cook, was the Fire Chief in Georgetown for over 25 years. Her family heritage includes a relationship on her mother’s side, to Harriett Beecher Stowe.
Mrs. Sheppard was a member of the Historical Society, Grange No. 53, and the Hiram O. Taylor American Legion Post, Women’s Auxiliary in Sterling, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Lady’s Auxiliary Post 1093 in Ipswich and the Hannah Dustin Society in Haverhill.
Calling hours for Mrs. Sheppard will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, November 29, followed by a funeral service at 7:30 p.m. in the Miles-Sterling Funeral Home, 100 Worcester Road (Rte. 12), Sterling. Burial will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, December 2, in Locust Grove Cemetery, Ipswich. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Town of Sterling Fire Department, Ambulance Fund, P.O. Box 515, Sterling, MA 01564.
