Biography

WORCESTER - Phyllis (Marcus) Berman, age 90, passed away on Sunday, January 29, 2017 at the Jewish Healthcare Center in Worcester.  She was born in Worcester on January 14, 1927, the daughter of Jacob and Jennie (Azernov) Marcus.  She married Udell Berman, also of Worcester, son of Henry and Bessie (Benton) Berman on April 3, 1948.
Phyllis graduated from Beth Israel Hospital in Boston as a Registered Nurse.  She taught first-year nursing students at St. Vincent Hospital in addition to working regular shifts and private duty.   Many years later she went on to earn a Bachelor’s degree from Anna Maria College.
Phyllis was an avid reader, often reading 2-3 books at the same time.  While in Worcester she was a member of Temple Emanuel and was actively involved in the Sisterhood and Brotherhood.  She also was active in local bowling and golfing leagues.  Phyllis loved to play cards (Bridge, Poker) and Mah Jong -  always reminding those with whom she was playing with that “there are no friends or relatives in cards”.
She and Udell moved to Florida in 1977 and lived there until 2014 when she returned to Massachusetts.  In  Florida, Phyllis continued working as an RN and visited the beach as often as possible.
Phyllis is survived by her four children, Lynn, Howard (Michael), Eileen and Andrew, and six grandchildren.  She is predeceased by her husband, Udell in 2009, a brother, Arnold (Mark) and a sister, Helen.
