RUTLAND—Phillip E. Glidden, 70, of Miles Road, died peacefully in the presence of his loving family on Tuesday, August 7, 2012, at the Ichabod Washburn Hospice Residence in Worcester after a 17 year courageous battle with cancer. Born and raised in Worcester, Phil was the son of Avery C. and Clara E. (Henze) Glidden and lived 44 years in Rutland.
Phil was a graduate of Worcester Boy’s Trade High School, Quinsigamond Community College and Worcester State College with a degree in criminal justice. He was a 31 year veteran of the Worcester Police Department retiring in 2001. Previously, he worked several years at Kesseli and Morse in Worcester. Phil was a proud U.S. Navy veteran and served aboard the USS Forrestal.
He was a member of All Saints Church and the Morning Star Lodge of Masons both in Worcester, a long time member of Rutland Board of Health, and was a former president of the Rutland Men’s Sauna Club. He was an avid skier and enjoyed camping, hiking and playing golf. Phil will be remembered as a loving and compassionate husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle who always put his family first. He had an indelible sense of humor and took great pride in being known as a clever prankster. Whether it be skiing or just hanging out, Phil looked forward to spending time with his family vacationing at their residence in West Townshend, Vermont. He also enjoyed his winter vacations in Florida with his friends. Phil was proud of his family’s ancestry and the fact that he was a direct descendant of the Mayflower and Captain Nathan Harrington of Paxton who fought in the Revolutionary War.
He is survived and will be greatly missed by his beloved wife of 46 years, Karin E. (Lundberg) Glidden; three sons, Mark A. Glidden and Tracy Hughes of Hollis, NH, Steven P.
