STERLING - Philip R. Smith, 74, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 4, 2015 at Leominster Hopsital, following several months of declining health. He was born and raised in Fitchburg, a son of the late Philip J. and Jeannette (Chalifaux) Smith.
Phil graduated from Fitchburg High School and began his working career with the Parts Rebuilders Company He later worked for the US Steel Company and retired from Saint Gobain/Norton Company in 2003. An avid woodworker and craftsman, Phil was known as the guy with every gadget and tool one could imagine. He loved to create Christmas decorations and many people were the proud recipients of these pieces. He loved to visit coastal Maine, especially Wells.
He leaves his beloved wife of 44 years, Sharon A. (Peeso) Smith; his son, Daniel P. Smith and his wife, Lisa and their two daughters, Stephanie and Cassandra Smith whom Phil truly adored and enjoyed spending his free time with. He also leaves his two brothers, Kenneth P. Smith and his wife, Mary Ann of Fitchburg and Richard J. Smith and his wife, Amy of Zephyr Hills, FL; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Phil's family on Tuesday, October 6, from 5-8 p.m. at the Miles-Sterling Funeral and Tribute Center, 100 Worcester Road, Sterling. His funeral will be held on Wednesday, October 7, from the funeral home with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 10 a.m. at Saint Richard of Chichester Church, 4 Bridge Street, Sterling. Burial will follow in Hillside Cemetery, Sterling. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the Sterling Fire Department Ambulance Fund, P.O. Box 21, Sterling, MA 01564.
