Philip J. Metcalf, Sr., 91, beloved husband of the late Laura Ann (Wiren) Metcalf, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 12, 2022, at the Day Kimball Hospital in Putnam, CT. Born in Oxford and raised in Worcester, he was a son of the late John and Beatrice (Sieswerda) Metcalf.
Phil was proud to serve in the National Guard from 1948-1960. Phil and Laura Ann were married March 28, 1952, and moved to Holden where they remained for thirty years while raising their family. After moving to Hubbardston, where he served as a Deacon at Hubbardston Evangelical Church for eight years, they settled in Templeton for the next thirty-eight years. Phil and Laura Ann enjoyed performing at many local nursing homes with their close friends, Joe and Eva Stranieri. Phil enjoyed a long career as a machine set-up operator, having worked as a foreman for O.S. Walker and Worcester Wire and Cable Company. After his retirement from Olson Manufacturing Company in 1984, he spent many hours perfecting his woodworking skills, making small pieces of furniture such as stools and tables. Above all else, Phil was a family man. He treated his wife like a Queen for 55 years and was a devoted father and wonderful grandfather and great-grandfather.
He will be lovingly missed and remembered by his son, Philip J. Metcalf, Jr. and his wife, Marie of Dudley; his daughter, Sandra MacAlister of Gardner; his sister, Barbara Safford of NY, his eleven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, Laura Ann and his parents, he was predeceased by his son, Dale Metcalf in 2000; his brother, Guy Metcalf; and two sisters, Sylvia Blatt and Dora LaPerle.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with his family from 4 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, August 17 in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden. A funeral service honoring his life will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, August 18 at Holden Chapel, 279 Reservoir Street, Holden. Burial will follow in Grove Cemetery, Holden. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or Down Syndrome Association.
