Philip M. Cannell

HOLDEN – Philip M. Cannell, 89, formerly of Wyoming Drive, died Friday, October 1, 2004, in Holy Trinity Eastern Orthodox Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Worcester.

His wife, Vivian M. (Helgren) Cannell, died in 1986. He leaves two sons, Philip J. Cannell and his wife Margaret, and Steven D. Cannell and his wife Donna, all of Rutland; and three grandchildren, Elizabeth, Erin and Bridgette Cannell, all of Rutland. A sister, Mildred Carlson, predeceased him. He was born in Worcester, son of John P. and Anne (Watson) Cannell, and lived 50 years in Holden. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II serving in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater.

Mr. Cannell worked at the Holden Post Office for 20 years, retiring in 1982. Previously he worked at Crompton Knowles in Worcester and later at the Worcester Art Museum. He was a member of the Athelstan Lodge of Masons now the Guiding Lights Masonic Lodge in Auburn. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the Scottish Rite Bodies of Worcester including: The Worcester Lodge of Perfection, Goddard Council, Prince of Jerusalem, and the Lawrence Chapter of Rose Croix. He was a member of the York Rite Bodies of Worcester including: Eureka Royal Arch Chapter, Hiram Council, Royal & Select Masters, and Worcester County Commandry. He was also member of the Boston Consistory, Aleppo Temple Shrine in Wilmington, Aletheia Grotto in Worcester, and the Worcester County Shrine Club. He was a member of the YMCA where he enjoyed walking and was an avid reader.

The funeral service for Mr. Cannell will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, October 5, in Chaffin Congregational Church, 155 Shrewsbury Street, Holden. Burial will follow in Hope Cemetery, 119 Webster Street, Worcester. Calling hours are from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday, October 4, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. Donations may be made Chaffin Congregational Church, 155 Shrewsbury Street, Holden, MA 01520; or the Shriners Burn Institute, 51 Blossom Street, Boston, MA 02114.
